Airlie Beach tours that are absolutely worth the hype

Airlie Beach is a top destination for tourists and Aussies alike thanks to its stunning beaches and its front row seat to the Great Barrier Reef.

Whether you're visiting for a weekend or a full week, there's plenty of activities worth checking out, and genuinely something for everyone. Go above sea level with scenic flights over the world renowned Great Barrier Reef, or head below the water on a snorkelling or diving trip to see the reef up close. Airlie Beach is a well known backpacker hub too, so if you're chasing adrenaline pumping activities worth telling your mates about, skydiving over the Whitsundays is right there waiting for you. Or maybe you're after a slower kind of weekend with friends or family, in which case a day sailing with the sun on your skin sounds like a slice of heaven.

I've broken this down by activity type to make it easy to find your kind of trip

  • Snorkelling: Jump in the water and see the reef up close, my pick for anyone who wants one unforgettable day out

  • Scenic flights: See the Whitsundays and Heart Reef from above, worth it for the iconic photos alone

  • Relaxing boat trips: Sunset sails and slower paced days on the water, ideal for couples or a chilled group trip

  • Adventureful: Jet skis, skydiving and the trips built for backpackers and thrill seekers wanting a story to tell

🤿 Snorkelling

One of the highlights of visiting Airlie is putting on some fins and exploring the local reefs. You'll see plenty of fish and colourful coral without needing any diving experience.

This is the exact style of tour I did with Redcat Adventures on my own Airlie Beach trip, snorkelling combined with Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet lookout in one full day.

🚁 Scenic Flights

If you want the view that makes Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet famous, the swirling white sand and turquoise water pattern that photographs so well, you need to see it from the air. A scenic flight over the Whitsundays and Heart Reef is the splurge activity of an Airlie Beach trip, but it's the one people talk about long after they've forgotten what they had for dinner each night. It's also a smart option if you're short on time and can't fit in a full day boat tour, or if you simply want the aerial view to go with your day on the water.

⛵ Relaxing Boat Trips

Not every day in Airlie Beach needs to be a full itinerary. Some of the best afternoons we had were the slower ones, and a relaxed sail is the easiest way to build that into your trip without giving up the water views and island scenery everyone comes here for. These are a great fit for couples, a low key group trip, or anyone who wants to swap the snorkel gear for a drink in hand and let someone else do the sailing.

Airlie: Adults Only Sunset Sail with Aperol Spritz/Antipasto - the golden hour activity of a trip, easy to slot in after a slower day

Airlie Beach: Whitsunday Islands Luxe Sail SUP & Snorkel Day - a good middle ground if you want a bit of everything, sailing, paddleboarding and snorkelling, without the intensity of a full adventure tour

🪂 Adventureful

These ones are for the backpackers and adventure travellers looking to make their trip iconic and come home with plenty of stories and photos to share.

So whatever type of trip you're planning, whether it's one big adrenaline day, a slow paced sail, or a mix of a few of these, Airlie Beach has a tour to match. My honest advice is to pick your one or two must do activities before you land rather than trying to fit them all in, especially if you're travelling during peak season (September to November) when the popular tours book out fast.
