view of the Three Sisters from Echo Point
Three days is genuinely the sweet spot for the Blue Mountains. Enough time for two decent hikes, and time to enjoy the town and beautiful lookouts. We flew from Brisbane, jumped on the train from Sydney straight into Katoomba. While most people would hire a car, we relied on local buses and trains to get around to keep our trip within budget. This does take a bit more planning and building time into your daily itinerary to get to each trailhead etc - but it’s all doable with the help of Google Maps.
We went in August, which meant a noticeably quieter town than the peak season which we loved. Plus the cool, crisp weather was ideal hiking conditions.
Here’s what you need to know
Best base: Katoomba (central, walkable, on the train line)
How we got there: Flew into Sydney, Blue Mountains Line train straight to Katoomba
Getting around: Local buses and trains
Trip length: Friday evening arrival. Monday departure.
When we went: August - quieter than peak season, cool and crisp, great for hiking
Vibe: Hiking heavy - our itinerary lends itself to outdoorsy folk who enjoy hiking being the dominant activity
Budget: Free national park entry + hikes; ~$150–$300+/night for accommodation depending on budget
If you're looking for more tour and activity ideas, you can find my list of Things to Do in Blue Mountains here.
Day 1 (Friday)
Arrive & Settle In
Friday is for arriving, dropping your bags, and getting organised for the days ahead. Be aware the restaurants aren’t open late in the off season, this caught us out but thankfully found one restaurant still open. If you have time, you could walk to Echo Point for a first look at the Three Sisters at sundown.
Day 2 (Saturday)
Burramoko Ridge (Hanging Rock)
This is the day and hike our whole trip was built around. We hiked out to Burramoko Ridge, better known as Hanging Rock - a narrow slab of sandstone jutting straight out over the valley with nothing but air underneath. It's a proper knee jerker if you get close to the edge.
The trail itself takes you through bushland for some time before opening up at the ridge. I always rely on AllTrails app to ensure we’re on the right track.
Hanging Rock really is a sight to behold. My partner dared to walk right out onto it; I was very happy admiring its grandeur from a safe distance a few metres back.
How to get there:
Either drive to the trailhead, or factor in time for the bus and a fair bit of walking to get to the start.
Hire a car - driving out to trailheads like Hanging Rock saves a good chunk of the walking-to-the-bus-stop time if you'd rather not rely on public transport
Day 3 (Sunday)
Grand Canyon Track, Blackheath
Sunday was our second serious trail day. The Grand Canyon Track near Blackheath is a loop through rainforest and a slot canyon - waterfalls, creek crossings, and a real sense of being swallowed by the landscape rather than just looking at it from above.
The loop takes about 2-3 hours and can be found here on AllTrails.
How to get there:
Drive, or get the bus or train to Blackheath from Katoomba and then walk to the trail head
the lush vegetation of the Grand Canyon track
Day 4 (Monday)
Grand Cliff Top Walk & Three Sisters, then home time
Monday doesn't need to be a write off just because you're travelling home. We fit in the Grand Cliff Top Walk and the classic Three Sisters lookout at Echo Point before heading back to Sydney. A lower effort way to close out the trip.
One thing that stuck with us the whole trip: the Blue Mountains gets its name from the blue haze given off by the eucalyptus oil in the surrounding forests. You can actually see it hanging over the valleys from almost every lookout, and once you know why it's there, you notice it everywhere.
How to extend your trip
If you've got more than a long weekend, here's where the extra days could take you:
+1 day: National Pass, Wentworth Falls. Another genuine multi-hour trail — cliff-carved ledges and waterfalls the whole way.
+1 day: Jenolan Caves. A full day trip from Katoomba, best with your own car or a small group tour. (Note at the time of writing this guide, Jenolan Caves is closed for major road repairs, with reopening planned for early 2027)
+2 days: Leura + Mount Wilson. Slow it down with Leura's shopping and cafes, then Mount Wilson's gardens (spring/autumn).
+1 day: Recovery day. After three multi hour hikes, a spa day (the Japanese Bath House is a local favourite) makes for a wonderful respite retreat. (Note at the time of writing this guide, the Japanese bath house will be closed 7th December 2026 to 8th January 2027)
